In Skagway, there are many excursions that are available to vistors costing hundreds of dollars. In this video I’m going to share with you our hike to Yakutania Point that was described by Gary Bembridge, “Skagway on a Shoestring”.
Skagway is a charming and historic town nestled in the southeastern corner of Alaska, USA. Surrounded by majestic snow-capped mountains and pristine wilderness, Skagway is a destination that captivates visitors with its natural beauty and rich heritage.

Hike to Yakutania Point

As you disembark from the cruise ship, at the Skagway port, you’ll start your hike in the main parking lot where all the buses load and unload. This is where your hike begins as you follow the following roads:
- “Congress Way” into town which turns into “2nd. Ave.”
- Follow “Main St.” to the left
- Then follow “State St.” all the way to the Skagway Footbridge
- From here you just follow the signs to Yakutania Point.
The hike takes you through the charming town of Skagway, with its colorful buildings and quaint shops, providing a glimpse of the town’s history during the Gold Rush era.
Leaving the town behind, the trail slowly leads you into the wilderness. Tall evergreen trees tower above, creating a peaceful canopy that shelters you from the elements. The scent of fresh pine fills the air, invigorating your senses as you venture further into the Alaskan wilderness.
As you continue along the trail, you can hear the gentle sounds of a nearby stream, its clear waters meandering through the landscape. The tranquil melody of the flowing water guides you, adding to the serenity of the hike.

As you approach Yakutania Point you will see great views of the cruiseships in port. Finally as you arrive at your destination you’ll have a spectacular view of the river and the rugged coastline, stretching out before you in all its untamed glory., and it’s a moment you’ll never forget.
You’ll find a spot to rest and take in the breathtaking scenery. The peace and solitude envelop you, and you can’t help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. The hike to Yakutania Point has been worth every step, a true adventure that has allowed you to connect with the natural beauty of Alaska.
Once you reach Yakutania Point, the best views can be obtained by venturing a little further. For an even more spectacular vantage point, you can climb out onto the rocks just beyond the picnic shelter. From there, you’ll have an unobstructed view of the breathtaking Alaskan wilderness. This elevated spot offers an even more panoramic view of the Skagway River and the surrounding mountains.
Both options provide unforgettable vistas, making the hike to Yakutania Point truly worthwhile and allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the untouched beauty of this Alaskan paradise.
